A charity bike ride taking place this September, from John O'Groats to Lands End (a JOGLE, to use the acronym), will be fuelled by local foods along its route.
The ride is in aid of What's Driving Parkinson's and the lead cyclist, James Bowthorpe, beat the world record for cycling around the world while fundraising for the same organisation.
The ride involves 35 cyclists at present, starting on 5 September and finishing on 12 September. You can view the route on www.jogle2010.org which shows the loations to be covered each day, such as Perth, Uttoxeter and Lichfield among many others.
Organiser, Amy Wright says she is looking for great places to stop for lunch and dinner - farm shops, farmers' markets, pubs and cafes - where food from local farms is served or can be cooked. There's a chef as part of the Jogle team - and they would also be grateful to have offers of campsites or other accommodation possibilities. What's in it for you, apart from feel-good? There could be some good media coverage of the stops, with the food adding an extra dimension to the story. The plan is to make this an annual event.

Getting permission for signage to direct people to your farmers’ market, farm shop or farm park, that is clear enough and doesn’t cost your profit margin for the year, is not an uncommon challenge for FARMA members.
The Telegraph last weekend featured a piece about the issue, particularly focusing on farmers’ markets.
FARMA is working with other organisations to campaign for legislation that prohibits the advertisement of farmers’ markets to be changed and updated as part of the new Government’s drive to get rid of ‘outdated’ laws and promote the ‘Big Society’.
This is something we should all get behind as it could have an impact for everyone in direct sales at some time, and change is long overdue. To sign up, click here and register with the petition site and leave your comment.

We think the message of this excellent website, www.lovefoodhatewaste.com is spot-on for farm shops, farmers' markets, pyo and box schemes. Customers will get more from their shopping experience at farm shops and farmers' markets if they plan the meals they'll make and buy the fresh ingredients they need. The Love Food Hate Waste website is packed with positive messages about buying food sensibly and using leftovers to make more meals.
'Every year in the UK we throw away £12 billion worth of food which could have been eaten. Wasted food is a waste of money and a major contributor to climate change. If we all stopped wasting food that could have been eaten, it would have the same environmental impact as taking 1 in 4 cars off UK roads. Love Food Hate Waste is a campaign from WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) that has lots of tasty left-overs recipes, a portion calculator, top-tips and date label advice to help us make the most of the food we buy.'
If you haven't already, do have a look at the website. You can create a link to it from your own website and sign up to the campaign which enables you to use the logo and recipes etc. |

Following the reports last week which claimed that the Food Standards Agency was to be scrapped under the new coalition government, it has emerged that the FSA was 'under review' rather than definitely being axed. The situation has now been clarified:
On Tuesday this week (20 July) the Prime Minister confirmed the transfer of some Food Standards Agency (FSA) responsibilities in England to the Department of Health (DH) and the Department of Food, Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra).
The announcement and press release can be found here http://www.food.gov.uk/news/newsarchive/2010/jul/fsachanges.
The FSA will in fact retain a clearly defined departmental function focused on its core remit of food safety. Policy responsibility will shift with immediate effect for functions moving to Defra. For functions due to move to DH, the policy responsibility will remain with the FSA for the time being as the scale of change is greater and the transfer more complex. A date for the transfer is still to be determined and further information about timescales for completion of the shift will be provided as soon as this is possible.
In the meantime existing contacts within the FSA remain unchanged.
These changes aim to enable Government food policy to be communicated and delivered in a coherent and consistent manner. DH, Defra and the FSA will work together to ensure this new structure protects consumer interests, reinforces efforts to improve the public’s health and supports a competitive food industry. The three departments will also work closely together to ensure consumers and business find it easy to get joined up engagement from government on food labelling policy. Consumers will 'continue to enjoy high levels of confidence in the safety of their food, as the FSA will still be providing this crucial function.'
